2014 Visit
by Julaina Kleist-Corwin
“Has it gone?”
“As far as I can see.”
“He will come back, he said so.”
“If they allow it.”
“What?”
“Do you trust their word?”
“I have to, it’s all I have left.”
“You have me.”
“But you are not him, born from my body.”
“He’s part of me too.”
“I guess you’re right.”
“Do you want to get a drink?”
“No, do you?”
“He took his hiking boots.”
“Why?”
“They said they have white hills.”
“A likely story.”
“Elephants too.”
“How can we be happy without him?”
“We’ll be fine.”
Lovers

Shadowy figures
Hide their truth from outsiders;
Disguise their passion
No Difference

Moon’s reflection
on an ocean
a lake, pond
or puddle
Your country
or mine
no difference
Your skin’s color
in a shadow
white, brown
or black
Your country
or mine
no difference

People with warm coats
Make shadows over creeping cracks
Together they stay

“Can I come visit?” he had said.
“Sure,” I had said hoping he’d never arrive. Words spoken eight years ago were too painful for me to forget.
Two days later he knocked. “I told you I’d come.”
“So I see.” His lined face marked the years that had passed. The face I once touched, kissed, loved.
“Will you go for a walk with me?”
“Let me grab my jacket and camera.”
We walked. He talked. Now we stood side-by-side, not touching, but close. Our shadows painted the cracked concrete. Could we really mend the rift that had torn our love apart?
